Global Warming

I'm really starting to feel as though there's no one in the global warming debate that can be trusted. On one side are the energy companies that want to do what they've always done whether it melts the icecaps or not and conservatives that think Jesus is coming back tomorrow, so it doesn't matter what happens to the planet--or that global warming is a bunch of hippie nonsense, anyway. Then, on the other side, are environmentalists who want to switch to wind and solar tomorrow and return to some pre-industrial fantasyland or unrepentant Stalinists who love environmental causes because they provide a new opportunity for controlling other people's lives.

Science, of course, should be able to provide an objective answer, but it doesn't look like that's happening. This seems to be an issue where academia has a preferred answer every bit as much as private industry.

I had always assumed that Miller vs. California...

...relaxed restrictions on pornography. Now I discover that's not exactly true. I'd never bothered to look into it all that closely, but since pornography is a lot more available now than it was in 1972, I'd just sort of assumed...

...but rarely with guys that consider themselves losers.

And almost never with guys that they think are losers.

Women value confidence even if they have to give up something to get it.

I always thought that Canadians...

...were supposed to be polite and unassuming. But every spring, a bunch of Canadians come to the hotel on a golfing trip and they are--without exception--a bunch of overbearing jackasses.

Sometimes, all I want...

I've never actually been catatonic, but I've been close. Sometimes it doesn't sound like such a bad thing.

One thing I hate...

...is when people (or institutions) tell me I have to do something but don't tell me why. Whenever I hear that something is required, my first reaction is always, "Or what?"

Probably one reason my life is the amazing story of prosperity and success that it is.

I love that there's a word for throwing something (or someone) out of a window, and I love that it's such an arcane and obscure word that it's almost always easier to say "thrown out of a window.

So, what do you think they mean by this?

Do they mean victims or, you know, "connected"?
